Selection of our Loire wines
MijnWijnPlein selects special fine wines from local winegrowers from Loire in combination with delicious recipes.
The Loire is the largest wine region in France. It runs 600km along the river Loire.
Because the Loire Valley is one of the northernmost wine regions, the harvest years are very important. The wines contain a lower alcohol content and fresher acids than in warmer areas. Many different red, white, rosé and sparkling wines are produced in the Loire Valley.
The Loire Valley includes a number of smaller wine districts and can be divided into four main parts:
- Upper Loire
- Pays Nantais (Région Ouest)
The Loire region is home to 63 appellations and runs from the western gneiss grounds of Muscadet in Pays Nantais on the Atlantic coast to the eastern marl areas of Sancerre in the Upper Loire. Pays Nantais is the largest white wine region in France. Anjou is the region of the Chenin blanc. In the Upper Loire mainly sauvignon blanc and pinot noir are produced. Many "natural" wines are produced in the Loire region, without the use of pesticides and artificial fertilizers. It is harvested by hand and the natural yeasts are preferred instead of the factory yeasts.
